Three-phase equipment, more so motors, must be connected to the rated nominal voltage for them to function well. If there is any loss/disconnection in any of these
phases, then the motor will continue operating with the remaining two. This phenomenon is called phase failure or single phasing.
When single phasing occurs, the motor continues to operate at reduced speed and experiences vibrations. Moreover, the line current also increases appreciably in the
remaining phases. This increase in current leads to internal heating of the motor windings. If not disconnected/isolated quickly, the windings will burn out. It is important to note that three-phase Induction motors may also fail to start in cases where phase failure occurs when they are not in operation.
In a nutshell, a phase failure is not a desirable phenomenon for the operation of induction motors. Consequently, we should always take prudent measures to protect
them against single phasing.
